Normally, the front surface of the eye (the cornea) is shaped like a sphere (basketball). This permits light to focus in one distinct point, which is necessary for clear vision. When the cornea is oval, or shaped like a football, a condition known as astigmatism is present. Astigmatism causes light to focus in more than one point, resulting in blurred vision.
Astigmatism is corrected with glasses or contact lenses, but can be corrected surgically. Corneal relaxing incisions placed on the steep axis of the cornea can reduce or eliminate astigmatism, thereby reducing the eye´s dependency upon glasses or contact lenses.
Dr. Johnny Gayton is pleased to offer Alcon’s LenSx laser, a bladeless, computer-controlled laser that allows us to plan and perform your surgery to exacting, individualized specifications not attainable with other surgical methods. By adding computer control to key steps of cataract surgery, the LenSx laser helps ensure the highest-precision surgical incisions. The LenSx laser is unquestionably the most technologically advanced option for cataract patients.
Some patients benefit from having different lenses in each eye. In this case an astigmatic correcting lens was used in the right eye and the presbyopia correcting lens combined with an astigmatism correcting procedure (CRI) was used in the left eye.
A cataract is a clouding that develops in the crystalline lens of the eye, varying in degree from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light. The gradual yellowing and opacification of the lens may reduce the perception of colors. Cataracts typically progress slowly to cause vision loss, and are potentially blinding if untreated. The condition usually affects both eyes, but almost always one eye is affected earlier than the other
Cataract surgery itself in most cases can correct a persons vision. But in some cases, LASEK may be used to fine tune vision especially in those that have had very poor vision all their life.
Farsighted patients are usually better candidates for a procedure called a lensectomy. This simple outpatient surgery uses the same technique as cataract surgery to replace your eye's natural lens with an artificial premium intraocular lens (IOL) implant designed to correct your vision. Refractive lensectomy eliminates your need to ever have cataract surgery in the future and can reduce your dependency on glasses and contacts.
Astigmatism is the result of the cornea and/or lens being oblong instead of spherical. Because of the oblong shape of the cornea and/or lens, light passing through the cornea and lens at different positions have different focal points, which can lead to blurry vision at all distances. When the natural crystalline lens of the eye is removed during cataract surgery, it can be replaced with a toric intraocular lens (IOL) to correct astigmatism.
